With modern plumbing codes mandating backflow prevention, thermal expansion can cause pressure buildup in domestic water systems. When demand is put upon a potable water system, hot water is drawn from the water heater.
Cold water from the supply line enters the water heater to replenish it. The colder water is heated to replace the hot water used. With the installation of a backflow preventer, check valve or pressure reducing valve on the supply line, the water heater and the system piping form a closed plumbing system under pressure. As the water is heated, thermal expansion occurs. Pressure increases until the relief valve opens and the expanded water "spills" from the water heater.
This "spillage" results in wasted BTU's and a potential safety hazard for the homeowner. It also provides an additional space in the system to accommodate the increased volume of water created by thermal expansion, returning it to the system when hot water delivery is demanded.

The product works great, I installed it a couple weeks back and it has held my water system pressure steady at 70 psi ever since. Also, I had a great experience with their customer service group. It's an optional accessory, but our municipal water supply has a ton of mineral content, so having the turbulator to create a flow of water through the tank to prevent build up was something I wanted to do.
I emailed customer support and got a very quick reply from Steven A, who then sent me a new turbulator via overnight shipping so that I could get my tank installed over the weekend as planned. I don't have much experience with plumbing repair but as a DIY project this was not bad at all. I'm very pleased with the product and the customer service. Expansion tank was delivered promptly enough Amazon Prime.
I was awaiting another part, so I did not check the pre-charge until a few days before getting ready to install. There was 0 psi in the air side. Figuring maybe it had not been pre-charged, I set a pre-charge of 40 psi and waited for the other part.
Just before installation, I set up to pre-charge up to 53 psi to match my water supply pressure and the pressure was again a 0 psi. I pumped it up to 53 psi and only then heard the air leaking out of the opening on the water side. Now I have to try to buy locally so I can get this project done. Only upside is that Amazon offered to refund full cost and does not want it shipped back. Perhaps they have had this issue a few times in the past?
My original Amtrol tank lasted for 15 years. I have to admit - I did not maintain the pressure in the tank like it should have been done. Finally my water heater started to leak and this is when I found the expansion tank was full of water the diafragm was broken. I think the failure of Amtrol tank has killed my water heater prematurely. The new ST tank came pre-charged to 50 psi.
