I bought a half acre in New Smyrna Beach and there is a very large and growing larger patch, of Bromelia Balansae. It really is beautiful. My concern is the University of Florida has this bromeliad on their non-native invasive species list. It's from South America. It will be a goal to keep it in check, though.

Gardens will be exploding with vibrant colour and tantalizing textures! This large, tropical plant is cultivated for its attractive dark green pineapple-like leaves, which emerge from a central stem. Like a firework burst, the inner leaves will turn a fiery red during the blooming period.
Small, fragrant white and burgundy flowers will also appear in the center from late spring to early summer. After the blooming period, small, orange, edible fruits appear. Heart of Flame is an easy-to-grow, extremely hardy garden plant that doesn't require much care. It can even withstand extended droughts and frosts! This evergreen plant will grow to be about 2 feet in height, and can spread up to 5 feet across! It does best in cool, moist, partially shaded areas in soil with good drainage.
Remove dead or damaged leaves and flowers for new shoots to appear. Be extra careful when pruning or transplanting, as the Heart of Flame has particularly sharp spines. Wear thick gloves. They would be ideal as ground covers, borders, and accent plants. For the best visual effect, plant in masses. Heart of Flame can also be grown as an indoor plant.
